Description:

The chemical formula of sodium benzoate is C7H5NaO2, which is a white granule or crystalline powder, odorless or slightly benzoin odor, slightly sweet, astringent, with a relative molecular mass of 144.12, stable in the air, easily soluble in water, and its aqueous solution. The pH is 8 and it is soluble in ethanol.

 

Benzoic acid and its salts are broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents, but their antimicrobial effectiveness is dependent on the pH of the food. As the acidity of the medium increases, its bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects are enhanced, but in alkaline medium, the bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects are lost. The optimum pH value of its anticorrosion is 2.5~4.0.


Application

1. Sodium benzoate is mainly used as a food preservative, and also used in the preparation of drugs, dyes, etc.
