Brazil Anvisa approves bioinsecticide Deladenus siricidicola

The Board of Directors of National Health Surveillance Agency have included active ingredient D54 (Deladenus siricidicola) in the list of monographies of active ingredients used in agrochemicals, household cleaning products and wood preservatives. The decision was taken following a public consultation.

After initiating the proposal on April 12, 2018, some 30 days were granted to those interested to present their criticism and suggestions related to the proposal. After this deadline, the biological insecticide was included among the “regulated” products in Brazil.

This decision has taken into account the contribution sent by the public, which is based on the deliberation of the Board of Directors of Anvisa. “The product is constituted by live animals, not being pertinent to toxicological classification,” stated Resolution RE No. 1217, published in the Official Union Gazette.

Deladenus siricidicola is a nematode used for the biological control of Sirex noctilio, an invasive pest of pine trees. According to the Brazilian Nematology Society, the trees attacked by this hymenopteran had their trunk infested by larvae in the growth stage, causing large galleries and depreciating the wood quality, besides triggering plant deaths.

The inclusion of D54 – Deladenus siricidicola in Agrochemicals with the Authorized Monographs list indicates that the active ingredient passed a regulatory evaluation and is ready for agricultural use, residential use, in aquatic environment and even as wood preservatives. The monograph indicates more information, such as common and chemical names, the class use, the toxicological classification and the crops for which the active ingredients are authorized with their respective maximum residue limit.
